Weekly Baggage: Come Sail Away

June 14, 2007 at 5:52 pm (Weekly Baggage)

I’ve never particularly liked those bags made out of seatbelts. Likewise the ones made of license plates. This one is different.

A couple of months ago, while out sailing around Alcatraz with a friend in her small boat, I saw a huge white sail edged in navy, full of the wind and pulling at the lines as if trying to break free; I suddenly understood the nautical aesthetic. It was Ralph Lauren, JFK and Jackie, Tortola, and Newport. It was the freshness of a sea breeze, the utilitarianism of wicker, the comfort of deck shoes, and the ease of sun tea. This bag takes it one step further, as it’s actually constructed out of recycled sailcloth. Perfect for a casual day at port before re-boarding the family yacht…or, you know, a Saturday in the city.
